Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The actor-turned-recording-artist oeuvre has long been ripe for ridicule -- Sebastian Cabot does Dylan, anyone? -- and short on surprises, but this warm, low-key effort by Downey offers up a few intriguing ones. Though he's toyed with music previously, the actor's commitment here is a total one, his troubadour guise carried via an earthy voice with echoes of Dave Matthews' and informed by lyrics with more than a little personal, if lyrically opaque, truth. The wistful "Broken" may be carried on the album's most lilting melody, but its repeated AA-creed refrain is a bittersweet reminder of Downey's personal demons. Spare, jazzy arrangements help keep the focus on Downey's voice throughout, a brave tack that sometimes overplays his novice songwriting skills. But while songs like the Wonder Boys-inspired "Hannah" may amble, the forceful "Man Like Me" and stately grace of "Kimberly Glide" are better showcases for Downey's musical promise. His eight originals are supplemented by two covers: an expected, if overly smoky jazz trio cover of Chaplin's "Smile" and a quaintly confident cover of Yes' "Your Move" sweetened by Jon Anderson himself on backing vocals. -- Jerry McCulley

It's like a small child following their mother into the kitchen

All that being said, I am coming to the terms that I like Def Leppard. I am pondering making my own "butt" rockin, hair expanding mix CD. The best of those late 70's and 80's bands. Styx, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey...that sort of thing. Though, I still don't know I could stomach much Bon Jovi.

Congratulations for pulling off what legions of others have done before you, and without one subatomic particle of originality. Touching yourself and rubbing up and down on elevator walls does not equal dancing. I advise you to try to do more than just show off the dance moves you learned while out clubbing - maybe take a class or two. Start with ballet to class yourself up a bit. And please realize that the fact that people out there want to masturbate to you doesn't automatically make you talented.

However, if you used to be a fan of REM, and have been disappointed with their recent efforts...rejoice. Accelerate is fantastic! You would swear this album came out in 1983. The guitar drives the album. Stipes vocals are raw and alive. They also did not seem to feel the need to fill the album up. Its only 35 minutes. They made 11 strong songs and felt that was enough. Just because you can put over 70 minutes on a CD doesn't mean you should. I'd rather have 35 minutes of strong material then 70 minutes that includes a bunch of crap I skip.

Accelerate is easily the best album I have bought this year. The best new music I have heard probably since the first Dresden Dolls album.

Now, I haven't been listening to a lot of metal recently anyway, and when I heard the track "Abnegation", which IF recorded for/gave to Bam Margera's "Viva La Bands" compilation (and may I add that I fucking HATE Bam Margera... few human beings are such an utter waste of life as that spoiled fuck is), I was truly concerned about the new album. "Abnegation" is mediocre at best, and dull and pointless at worst. However, fan boy that I am, I dl'd the new album last night...

Hot. Damn.

Pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I am very impressed with this album. IF seems to have found their balance point between the rapid-fire thrashism of their past, and the pop-influenced melodic textures of their last few outings. The twin guitar harmonies that have been scaled back on the last few albums return with a vengeance, and newly buzz-cut lead guitarist Bjorn Gellote proves to be the reverse of Samson, flexing shred muscle all over the album. Vocalist Anders Friden continues to work in a mid-high range growl/scream, and while he throws a few sections of clean singing in (most noticeably on the redundant "The Chosen Pessimist", my least favorite track on the album), but he seems to be realizing that unlike many of his countrymen, the clean style is not his strong suit. Stand-out tracks (IMNSHO): "Disconnected", "I'm The Highway", "Sober & Irrelevant", and "Alias".

On a side note, the band seem to be sticking to the pop song length quite a bit, with about 75% of the album averaging 3:30 minutes. In theory this smacks of a too oft repeated song structure, but with limited listening, I can't say that it's jumped out as a problem to my ears.

Now this would be a cool show!

Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen unveiled plans on Tuesday for his first tour in 15 years, starting in Toronto on June 6.

The announcement comes a day after the gravel-voiced performer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York, along with Madonna, John Mellencamp, The Dave Clark Five and The Ventures.

The tour will include major gigs like the Glastonbury Festival in Britain on June 29, where he could be performing to a crowd as large as 150,000 people, to the more intimate Opera House in Manchester.

It includes dates in Toronto and Montreal and a series of concerts across Europe. The last confirmed date of the tour is Vienna on August 29, although more dates are expected to be added, organizers said.

"For many this tour will be the once in a lifetime opportunity to see the legend that is Leonard Cohen," said Rob Hallett from AEG Live, the company promoting the tour.

Cohen, 73, published books of poetry and novels before turning to music. His 1967 debut album, "Songs of Leonard Cohen," included what became one of his most popular songs, "Suzanne."

Other favorites include "Hallelujah," "Sisters of Mercy" and "Bird on a Wire." His songs have been recorded by R.E.M., Billy Joel, Elton John, Don Henley and others.

Born in Montreal, Cohen started his musical career in New York in the late 1960s. He fought depression and retreated to a California monastery in the 1990s to study Zen.

So I started a new job a few weeks ago, and happily it includes my own office where I can listen to music while I work (as a DJ and music junkie, that's oh so important for my sanity). I've been bringing a handful of CDs to work each day, and since most of my "club fodder" CDs are all packed into large CD books for DJing, it's been a great excuse to refamiliarize myself with some of the CDs that would normally sit on my shelf and collect some dust (which, oddly enough, is exactly what my 'Rock This Town' event is all about: http://tribes.tribe.net/rockthistown )

Which brings me to today's first album - the icon for this tribe, 1994's 'Boingo'. It's been a couple of years since I last gave it a full listen. One of the things that really occurs to me with this album is how Beatles-eque it all is (in particular, the 16 minute ‘Change’ has moments that feel like they were sampled from ‘Taxman’)… which is interesting for a group that has more in common with Cab Calloway than John Lennon.

That, and "Insanity" is such a bridge between Mr. Elfman's orchestral cinema scores and rock persona.

I've been having a rough time just lately (ugly people problems), and have been feeling extra-grateful for my friends and my boyfriend, who have made sure to show me how much they love me. This song - which came into my life at just the right time - and reminds me how lucky I am. It's "Sometime" by Sweet Honey in the Rock. Simply reading these lyrics will not be the same as hearing the AMAZING sound of this all-woman a cappella group's soulful song. But maybe it will inspire you to go out and hear it for yourself. You will be dumbfounded - I guarantee this.

Sometime day breaks in my life
Sometime the sun shines in my life
Sometime things work right in my life
You are my sometime

When shackles fall from my heart
When the rocks seem to roll from my way
When I find myself open to love
You are my when

For the ending of being alone
For the believing in the smiles and warmth I feel
For our leavings to come back again and again and again
You are my for

Sometime don't come every day
When seems to never get here at all
For is the future that I could never face
And you bring them all to me
You are my sometime
You are my when
You are my forever

Even if you're not the biggest U2 fan, the technology really blew me away, and the movie was wonderfully edited; it's not a bunch of hokey 3D gimmicks interspersed with regular footage. The whole film is in 3D with the latest 3D technology using polarized glasses, so the colors are accurate, and the movie just has a very clean sharp feel. It's also presented in Dolby 5.1 Surround, so while the sound isnt as good as live, it's pretty damned good!

This is going to ramble a bit....if you read it, thanks. If you don't I can't say I blame you.

The song K posted about by Finger Eleven got me to thinking. Not the song itself...but the sound of the song. It's rock. Not metal, not pop, (though it does seem very "produced" at times). Is just normal rock still viable? There are seemingly very few bands that do just rock anymore. Metal is healthy, rap is (shockingly) still vibrant. Country music will never die, hell the worse it is the better it is....a true conundrum. Where is rock? Finger Eleven seems to be doing rock, but who else? I can think of a few that are making it doing just rock. Arcade Fire, Our Lady Peace, The Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers. I know there are others...but remember back 10, 20, 30 years ago rock was everywhere. Just rock. Is rock dieing? These groups are just the hangers on?
Kind of like the rise and fall of brick and mortar music stores. The kind of store I used to work in. The kind of store I used to bleed for. The kind of store I would still like to own. I would love to own my own shop. It's just not viable anymore. The kind of shop where they have obscure stuff, and play obscure stuff, the kind of shop where people go to learn about music. Nowadays people go to Best Buy and buy what they are spoon fed on the radio. Or, download it never even leaving their couches. I admit to downloading a song in my past. With downloads getting so popular groups are less likely to even make an album. Just make a 3 minute quick sound bite that will get downloaded a bunch. I remember buying an album, sitting down with a beer and my headphones and doing nothing but absorbing it for hours. It's been a long time since I have done that. Or...even been inspired to. A band no longer has the time to layer a good album start to finish. They have to get your attention in 3 minutes. (I know I am generalizing)
I feel that right now the music industry is in a transition period. No one really knows where it is going to go. Music stores the, way they are now, are dead. CD's are screatching out their death yowl. Bands are having to find new ways of making money. Could be this could inspires bands to tour more. However with less money being made production values will dip. Then again, what a person can do at home with computers counters some of that. The problem is any knuckle head with a guitar, three chords, and a broken heart can record a song and put it out there. It will be difficult to filter out all the crap to get to the good stuff without....that's right, those long haired tattooed and pierced freaks at the ol' record shop. I guess that is what I was...I was a filter.

Is there still a place in this world for rock? For music stores? For filters?

Download Uproar: Record Industry Goes After Personal Use
By Marc Fisher
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 30, 2007; Page M05

Despite more than 20,000 lawsuits filed against music fans in the years since they started finding free tunes online rather than buying CDs from record companies, the recording industry has utterly failed to halt the decline of the record album or the rise of digital music sharing.

Still, hardly a month goes by without a news release from the industry's lobby, the Recording Industry Association of America, touting a new wave of letters to college students and others demanding a settlement payment and threatening a legal battle.

Now, in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

"I couldn't believe it when I read that," says Ray Beckerman, a New York lawyer who represents six clients who have been sued by the RIAA. "The basic principle in the law is that you have to distribute actual physical copies to be guilty of violating copyright. But recently, the industry has been going around saying that even a personal copy on your computer is a violation."

RIAA's hard-line position seems clear. Its Web site says: "If you make unauthorized copies of copyrighted music recordings, you're stealing. You're breaking the law and you could be held legally liable for thousands of dollars in damages."

They're not kidding. In October, after a trial in Minnesota -- the first time the industry has made its case before a federal jury -- Jammie Thomas was ordered to pay $220,000 to the big record companies. That's $9,250 for each of 24 songs she was accused of sharing online.

Whether customers may copy their CDs onto their computers -- an act at the very heart of the digital revolution -- has a murky legal foundation, the RIAA argues. The industry's own Web site says that making a personal copy of a CD that you bought legitimately may not be a legal right, but it "won't usually raise concerns," as long as you don't give away the music or lend it to anyone.

Of course, that's exactly what millions of people do every day. In a Los Angeles Times poll, 69 percent of teenagers surveyed said they thought it was legal to copy a CD they own and give it to a friend. The RIAA cites a study that found that more than half of current college students download music and movies illegally.

The Howell case was not the first time the industry has argued that making a personal copy from a legally purchased CD is illegal. At the Thomas trial in Minnesota, Sony BMG's chief of litigation, Jennifer Pariser, testified that "when an individual makes a copy of a song for himself, I suppose we can say he stole a song." Copying a song you bought is "a nice way of saying 'steals just one copy,' " she said.

But lawyers for consumers point to a series of court rulings over the last few decades that found no violation of copyright law in the use of VCRs and other devices to time-shift TV programs; that is, to make personal copies for the purpose of making portable a legally obtained recording.

As technologies evolve, old media companies tend not to be the source of the innovation that allows them to survive. Even so, new technologies don't usually kill off old media: That's the good news for the recording industry, as for the TV, movie, newspaper and magazine businesses. But for those old media to survive, they must adapt, finding new business models and new, compelling content to offer.

The RIAA's legal crusade against its customers is a classic example of an old media company clinging to a business model that has collapsed. Four years of a failed strategy has only "created a whole market of people who specifically look to buy independent goods so as not to deal with the big record companies," Beckerman says. "Every problem they're trying to solve is worse now than when they started."

The industry "will continue to bring lawsuits" against those who "ignore years of warnings," RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy said in a statement. "It's not our first choice, but it's a necessary part of the equation. There are consequences for breaking the law." And, perhaps, for firing up your computer.

I thought Sweeny Todd was fabulous! Though, oddly....both Cybele and I had nightmares last night. Not seemingly related to Sweeny Todd, however I find it odd that we saw the movie last night, and both had nightmares.

My parents split up when I 9ish. We had a fabulous family unit for a while, I was a lucky young child. But, as sometimes happen, they split up. Fast forward a year or two, and I'm still having issues with the whole thing. My Dad is re-married, and now living a life with a family I don't recognize. I have a step-sister who rebels against everything and seemingly loathes having my father around. Don't get me wrong, I always got along with, and am still friends with my now ex stepsister. So, in the time of my life, I decided to turn to a southern Baptist church for my family. This, whole period turned out to be the lowest most depressed period of my life. Oh, can't forget the Epstein Bar Syndrome, Mono, and Anemia I was also suffering from at the same time. For a kid of 11 or 12 (who was already confused), this is heavy shit. My Dad would come pick us up for the weekend and take us to a horrible house, in a horrible neighborhood. Whenever I was there my stepsister was always playing Led Zeppelin. As a result, Led Zeppelin became the soundtrack for this shit storm. As a result, whenever I heard Led Zeppelin, it would take me back to this time. Not so much a memory, or anything, just back to this feeling of muck and hate.
until...
I'm in a much different place now, I've moved past the mad devotion I had to the particular brain washing sect of Southern Baptist. I've figured out who I am, and have dealt with my parents divorce and have a fabulous loving relationship with both. So, the other day, while watching Shrek 3, a Led Zeppelin song came on. For the first time it did not take me back, I was able to just hear it, listen to it a bit, and....I liked it.
I think I am now ready to listen, hear, Led Zeppelin. Where should I start?

They use Beatle's music to tell this great story of life in the 60's...with the war, finding love...and great music.

Pretty soon (the day after thanksgiving) you will have 7 chances a day to see Paddy West (Seadogs in Maritime clothes) at the Cow Palace. Also you will be able to see the LORS (hotsie totsies), Broadside Music Hall, and Brass Farthing. Not to mention dancing at Fezziwigs, fine eating and drinking, shopping galore, and so much more!
There is a cost to get in the door...I believe it is now $22 a ticket. Which seems at first to be a lot to get in, but considering the amount of shows you get to see...the quality of talent, plus the sights, sounds, and smells of the Dickens Fair...it isn't that bad. There are also coupons to be printed out from the dickens website....or can be picked up and Longs Drugs.

OK...commercial over (for now) Honestly speaking, it's a whole lot of fun, and most of it is fit for the whole family. The places that aren't, are mostly clearly marked. If you have wee little ones that could be impressionable...stay away from French Postcards (Nudity)...and maybe don't have a seat at Mad Sals (songs with adult content, but mostly clean language...you could have to answer some odd questions from your child..."Mom what is she doing with that cucumber?).

and...they beat Brittney Spears to number 1 this week. Hell even Billboard changed their own rules for the Eagles...check it out now (funk so rubber)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The Eagles beat Britney Spears for the top spot on the Billboard 200 Top Albums chart this week.

The band's new album "Long Road Out of Eden" debuted at No. 1 on the chart by selling 711,000 copies during its first week of release, Billboard.com reported Tuesday.

Spears' album "Blackout" sold 290,000 copies.

The Eagles' first album in 28 years landed on top after Billboard revised a policy which considers albums sales even when they're only sold exclusively by one retailer.

Billboard changed its policy after Wal-Mart, which had exclusive rights to sell the Eagles album in its stores and on its Web site, agreed to release its sales numbers, Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's director of charts said.

***if you don't want to to go to Wal-Mart you can buy the album from the Eagles website...which is what I did.

I am forwarding this note from a very dear friend trying to make difference. (The note was written for the faire community...as you can see but I thought every little bit can help) Please help if you can.

Dear Faire Community,

As you know our friends in Southern California are fighting fires in over 15 counties. Hundreds of thousands of acres have burned, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, and thousands have watched their homes destroyed. It has now come to light that our friend David Springhorn has become a victim of this disaster. His home and his workshop along with countless items of memorabilia and artifacts from a long and loved tenure in this community are gone.

There are many disaster relief programs that have been established to help people monetarily when disaster strikes. There will be programs for those who have lost their homes, insurance payments will be collected and mundane possessions replaced. However, the very special and creative people that we know, will still have a void that cannot be filled by the well planned rescue and relief organizations that are there for everyone else. Something has to happen to enable the big hearted people of this community to come together and pool resources to assist those who are a part of our extended family.

There is currently an effort to produce a California specific outreach program that will help people like us. A lawyer (also a Faire person) is organizing the paperwork that will begin a not-for profit foundation to aid the people of our community when disaster strikes. We will have what is necessary to collect donations by Wednesday of next week.

The goals of this organization are to:
• Replace destroyed musical instruments, especially those that are period specific
• Replenish costume wardrobes
• Buy new tools for specialized trades such as potting wheels and lathes
• Collect monies for continued support of those who might be victims in the future.
• Create a Disaster Relief CD with the help of the generous talents of the musicians in our community
• Lend emotional support through letters cards and time from our community
• Lastly and most importantly, coordinate our network of caring people, to replace lost photographs with similar ones from other people's collections, and contact the artisans who originally made lost memorabilia to replace items that could never be recovered through insurance claims.
Many people have already begun work to achieve these goals. Musical directors are connecting with their groups to put together the CD, clothing vendors are offering to donate costume pieces, and a website is in the works to get our message out to the public. I will file for a DBA and not-for-profit status on Monday to enable us to collect tax deductible donations.

Our focus will begin with David, he has been a member of this community for many years and has touched many hearts. He has lost much and will need our support. Should anyone else come forward with a need we will of course do what we can to help them as well but in helping David to our fullest capacity, we will open the gates to helping others as well.

To do this right we will need the support of not only the big hearted givers who are able to give cash, but the help of you as directors, owners, and managers. You have the unique ability to bring people together and make a difference. If you are interested in becoming a part of this effort please let me know. I have several form letters that can be personalized for you or your company and dispersed quickly through missives and social groups like those on Tribe.net. The following are some immediate needs for the success of the foundation, a full list of needs will be available on request.

We need:
• A Board of Directors, please e-mail me with a letter of interest if you would like to be a part of the board.
• Friends who know those affected to come forward with photos and stories.
• Writers who will hand write a card or a letter with anecdotes and kind words of encouragement and love
• A recording studio for musicians to record the CD that will be sold in an effort to raise money
• An artist to donate his or her talents towards the look of the site, the CD and to create a logo for the Foundation
• Someone to help organize letter writing campaigns, find people who may have old footage or voice recordings and bring out memorabilia the owners are willing to donate.
I have communicated with many prominent directors through-out California. Every response has been extremely supportive and has committed to being on board any plan we come up with. Great minds are at work and we need you to be a part of it. Please join me at the Ca Faire Participants Disaster Relief Tribe tribes.tribe.net/fairefrie...sterrelief Suggestions are welcome. Please send this on to those who may be interested.

Josh played a few songs on his acoustic with no band and no microphone and you could hear him as clear as can be (the boy can project).

Another one of the good one's gone.

Ministry's bassist Paul Raven was found dead today [October 20th] in a private home in a small French village on the Swiss border. Initial reports indicate Raven's passing was due to a heart attack. Raven (known also for his work with Killing Joke, Prong) was in Geneva working with French recording artists Treponem Pal on their new release, with Marco Neves, Ted Parsons (Prong) and members of The Young Gods.

Born in Wolverhampton UK on January 16, 1961, Paul Vincent Raven established himself with his work in the seminal post-punk/industrial group Killing Joke when, in 1982 he replaced the original bassist for the band, recording and touring with the group throughout its most commercially successful period, performing on Fire Dances, Night Time and Brighter than a Thousand Suns. Throughout his extensive career, Raven participated in other collaborations including Prong, Murder, Inc., Pigface, Godflesh.

Most recently, Raven was nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Metal Performance for his work with Ministry's Al Jourgensen, with whom he had begun working with in late 2005 on the 13th Planet release Rio Grande Blood. After a 2006 World Tour with Ministry, Raven helped Jourgensen and Prong's Tommy Victor pen the September 18, 2006 Ministry release The Last Sucker, Ministry's final studio release.

States Jourgensen: "I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians and his fans the world over."

"The one consolation is knowing Raven's already hooked up with the right people and started a new project in the After Life. God's speed, Raven. Rest In Peace, you fucking pirate."

Raven's newest project, Mob Research, featuring members of Warrior Soul and The Mission UK, and schedule for release on 13th Planet Records in 2008, was in the final mixing and mastering phases at the time of Raven's sudden and unexpected passing.
